Writing and Editing
Developmental and copy editing tailored for peer review, search committees, colleagues in your field, or general audiences.
As a scientist, you need to transform complex experimental data into a persuasive and logical narrative flow for a variety of audiences: reviewers, job search committees, the general public, etc. However, many scientists find this stressful and time-consuming.
I work directly with researchers to turn rough drafts into polished final products. My services include both developmental editing (overall organization, logical flow, narrative structure) and copy editing (grammar, syntax, word usage, sentence structure, adherence to style guidelines). I can work with drafts at any stage and offer multiple rounds of editing as needed.
In return, you gain confidence, reduce stress, and free up your time!
Example services
- Grant proposals: Clarify specific aims, align project narrative with review criteria, and critique the rationale of proposed experiments.
- Peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters: Evaluate the narrative arc from Introduction to Discussion, clarify methodology, and ensure that claims are supported by evidence.
- Figure design and legibility: Evaluate figures and diagrams for clarity, visual appeal, and continuity with the manuscript text.
- Academic job packages and statements: Review CVs/resumes, research proposals, and/or teaching statements for job applications at any level: prospective graduate students and postdocs, faculty search committees, or transitions from academia to industry.
- Ph.D. & Master’s theses: Develop the structural organization and chapter continuity, clarify the main points, link the pieces into a smooth narrative flow, and provide thorough copy editing. I can also help you practice your oral thesis defense.
How it works
- Services tailored to your needs: Book a free 30-minute consultation. We discuss the scope of your project and the level of editing needed, and come up with a personalized plan for you.
- Track changes and marginal notes: Editing is done in Word or Google Docs using tracked changes, along with comments in the margins explaining the rationale behind major structural suggestions. You are always free to accept or reject changes.
- Multiple revision rounds: I can work with a draft at any stage, whether it’s very rough or close to the final version. I offer single-round edits for near-final drafts, as well as multi-round edits for rougher drafts in which I re-review the text after you incorporate changes.
- Turnaround timelines: Standard turnaround is 7–14 business days depending on document length and level of editing needed. Rush turnarounds are accommodated based on calendar availability.
